Details from District 2: Cash entry bill fails to pass House, lab grown meat heads to Senate

We are halfway through the 100th legislative session! Week 4 has been a very full week. It is our only five-day week of session. 

On Monday, we voted on my bill HB1017 on the House floor. This bill would have required all schools in the state to accept cash for entrance into a school activity. It received 35 yeas and 33 nays. Even though it had more yeas it needed 36 to pass because we have 70 seats in the House. Only 68 voted that day. 

I do want to note that it is greatly appreciated that Brandon Valley does take cash but there are several schools in the area that do not accept cash at school events. 

On Tuesday, I presented HB1109 to the Ag Committee. This bill would prohibit the sale and production of lab grown meat in the state of South Dakota. It passed committee 8-5 and it was brought to the floor for a vote on Thursday. It passed 42-26! It is headed to the Senate side now where it will need to be passed before it reaches the governor to become law. 

On Thursday evening we had the pleasure of attending the Governor’s Military Dining Out with David and Virginia Kull. We also got to dine with Attorney General Marty Jackley, Colonel Stacy Kooistra and his wife Anna who are residents of Brandon. 

On Saturday, Feb 8 there was an Inauguration Ceremony for our new governor Larry Rhoden. 

It’s always fun to see people from our District at the Capitol and this week I had the opportunity to visit with Jill Meier for Media Day and Jarrod Larson was there with the superintendents. Hopefully we will see more of you on Feb. 26 for Brandon’s Day at the Capitol!
