Journey with the Journal

The Brandon Valley Journal went from rim to rim in the Grand Canyon with two Brandon women, Melinda Else (left) and Deb Bertsch. This picture was snapped on Wednesday, June 12 at the Colorado river near Phantom Ranch, which is located at the bottom of the Grand Canyon. The journey was made in 115-degree temperatures and was even hotter in the sun at Phantom Ranch. The bridge seen in the background is known as the black bridge, which leads up the South Kaibab Trail. A second bridge, the Silver Bridge, crosses the river to the Bright Angel Trail. Despite the heat, over four days they navigated from North Kaibab to Bright Angel, about a 23-mile trek, plus extra side trail exploring while carrying survival needs in their backpacks that weighed about 40 pounds. Whether you’re venturing out near or far from home this summer, remember to pack your hometown paper, the Brandon Valley Journal, snap a photo and submit it to editor@bvjournal.info.
