Brandon Valley students, staff ‘finish strong’

By:
Dr. Jarod Larson, BVSD Superintendent

From academic successes to outstanding activity performances, our students and staff have performed extremely well this past school year. I want to thank all our students and staff for their hard work, strong commitment, and persistence throughout the year. Your commitment to being an “Active Learner” and finishing strong yields extraordinary results.

As the school year is winding down, it is important for parents and guardians to understand the potential impact of summer reading loss. Summer skill losses widen the gap each year between more proficient and less proficient readers.

Research demonstrates that children who read books over the summer have better results than their peers who do not engage in summer reading. Reading as a leisure activity is a strong predictor of comprehension, vocabulary, fluency, and reading speed. In addition, children that have a reading role model in the home read more often and achieve greater academic results. I strongly encourage all of our adults to be reading role models and our kids to be leisure summer readers while participating in the summer reading program.

Lastly, a special thank you to the committee that planned, organized, and executed the Valley Springs Elementary Farewell Celebration this past Saturday. We also would like to thank all the patrons, students, staff, and families that came out and enjoyed the farewell celebration. It was a tremendous community event!

Go Lynx!
