National headquarters cancels Legion baseball for 2020
For less than 24 hours, the Legion baseball season in South Dakota was moving forward.
On Saturday, the South Dakota Legion baseball commission agreed to plunge ahead with the 2020 season. By the next day, via an email, the American Legion National Headquarters suspended all 25 states from league play this summer. The announcement doesn’t say teams can’t play, but the program won’t be sponsored by Legion baseball.
With the Legion baseball season being axed, Brandon also misses out on the opportunity to show off its championship-caliber stadium. In just their first bid, Brandon had been selected to host this year’s state Class A Senior Legion tournament.
Jeremy VanHeel, head coach of Brandon Valley’s spring club and Legion baseball teams, said area coaches will meet Wednesday to discuss organizing an “informal” league. Van Heel confirmed that teams in Sioux Falls, Renner and Yankton expressed interest in the temporary league.
