Ward 3 Alderman files for four-year term; Mayoral vacancy in Valley Springs has one filing to date

Bruce Johnson, who currently fills one of two Ward 3 chairs on the Brandon City Council, has filed his nomination petition for election to a four-year term. City Finance Officer Christina Smith confirmed the filing on Monday.

Johnson has tested out the position after being appointed twice. His first appointment came in September 2022 and again in May 2023.

Ward 1 Alderman Tim Jorgenson said he would not seek a second term, but will continue to serve on the Brandon Development Foundation.

If more than one candidate files for either ward chair, a candidate forum is scheduled for Tuesday, March 5 in the City Council Chambers. The forum is a joint endeavor of the Brandon Valley Area Chamber of Commerce and the Brandon Valley Journal.

The race for Valley Springs’ mayor remains a one-candidate race at this time. Rick Larsen, who is a current member of the City Commission, is the only candidate to file to date.

If no other filings are submitted by the Feb. 23 deadline, Larsen will officially take office at the Commission’s May 14 meeting.

The mayor is the only vacancy on the Valley Springs City Commission this year, and the term is for five years.

Long-time mayor Carl Moss announced in January that he would not be seeking re-election, and this May, he will wrap up 27 years of service to his community in that capacity.

Nominating petitions must be filed with the respective municipality by 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 23.

Municipal elections, if warranted, will be held Tuesday, April 9.
