Roses & Raspberries: Thumbs up, thumbs down around town
• Congratulations to the Brandon Lions Club on their 60th anniversary and the commemorative bench they dedicated and placed at the Brandon Veterans Memorial. The Lions are great community players, providing valuable vison screenings to our local youth and assist with vision needs for those in need. So, please, continue to drop off your aluminum cans at the Lions Club shed located in the Sunshine Foods parking lot.
• The cooler temperatures and recent rainfalls have perked up people and lawns, and should be giving some relief to Brandon’s water woes.
• It’s been a long summer of necessary road repairs and inconvenience for some residential neighborhoods in the city (Redwood Boulevard and the Brandon Park Street Improvement project), along Interstate 90 and west of Brandon on Rice Street. The good news here is that a few of the projects will be winding down soon.
• Kudos to the Gauntlet for donating 100 percent of the event profits to Royal Family Kids. The event returned to Brandon for a second Saturday, thanks to the effort and community spirit of the folks at Circuit Fitness. Royal Family focuses on giving abused, abandoned and neglected children in the foster care system a chance to experience self-esteem and character-building summer camps.
• Extra-curricular activities are in full swing at Brandon Valley and school starts today, which is an indication that summer vacation has come to a close.
• Hats off to Zane Swenson and the staff at the Brandon Golf Course for their hard work leading up to and during the SDGA State Amateur Golf Tournament. The improvements made to the course were well noticed by players and golf fans that took in the three-day event.
