Moped laws in place for safety of all
With the arrival of summer and warmer weather, the Brandon Police Department has noticed an increase in mopeds on the road. Mopeds are under 50cc in engine size, according to Police Chief Joe Weir. Weir and his staff of officers ask drivers to follow moped operator regulations and the rules of the road, which apply to mopeds.
• Eye protection, such as glasses or goggles, is required for all drivers.
• Drivers under 18 years of age must wear a helmet.
• Registration is not required, but all drivers must have a valid license.
• Drivers cannot overtake and pass a motor vehicle in the same lane, operate their moped between adjacent lanes of traffic or operate their moped more than two abreast in a single traffic lane.
Failure to follow the regulations concerning mopeds will result in a misdemeanor citation with a standard fee of $122.50.
