Journal Editorial: Here’s to a great school year

It’s that time again!

On Aug. 26, the hallways of Brandon Valley schools will once again fill with the sounds of laughter, chatter, squeaky shoes and perhaps a few nervous jitters as students head back to school.

A new school year is always a fresh start. For students, it’s a chance to learn something new, make new friends, try a new activity or simply become a little more confident than they were last year.

For teachers and staff, it’s another opportunity to inspire, encourage and make a difference in the lives of young people.

And parents? They get to navigate the morning rush, homework, activities, school events and all the other adventures that come with having a child in school. We wish them patience – and plenty of coffee!

But a successful school year takes more than students, teachers and parents. It takes an entire community. From school volunteers and coaches to bus drivers, grandparents, neighbors and local businesses, we all have a role in helping our kids succeed.

As the school year begins, let’s also make safety a community priority. Drivers, please slow down and pay attention in school zones. Watch for children walking, biking, riding scooters and crossing streets, and be especially alert around buses and drop-off areas.

And kids, please remember that drivers don’t always see you. Look both ways before crossing, put down the phone and make eye contact with drivers when possible. Be predictable and stay alert.

Let’s send our students off with encouragement, patience and a whole lot of enthusiasm.

Here’s to a safe, successful and fun-filled school year, Brandon Valley! May 2026-27 be a year full of learning, laughter, new experiences and plenty of reasons to be proud of our kids. Welcome back, Lynx!
