Journal Editorial: HBN is big reward for Brandon
For four nights, the roar of engines at Huset’s Speedway was accompanied by something else that should make the Brandon area smile: the sound of economic activity.
Hundreds of race fans, crews and visitors poured into our community for one of the biggest weeks in dirt-track racing. They came for the excitement on the High Bank Nationals, but they also filled hotel rooms, ate at local restaurants, shopped in area stores and stopped at convenience stores to fuel up before heading to the next event. The benefits of hosting marquee events stretch far beyond the racetrack itself.
Track owner Tod Quiring once again demonstrated why Huset’s Speedway has become a destination for racers and fans from across the country. The High Bank Nationals finale featured a jaw-dropping $300,000 winner’s purse, with an additional $100,000 bonus awaiting any driver outside the World of Outlaws who could pull off the victory. It’s the kind of payout that grabs national attention and puts Brandon squarely on the racing map.
Of course, there were winners every night of the four-day celebration, with drivers taking home impressive paydays and fans witnessing some of the best racing anywhere. But perhaps the biggest winner is our community that benefited from the influx of visitors and the positive exposure generated by the event.
It takes vision and investment to build something special. Quiring has shown a willingness to dream big, and race fans have responded in kind. The result is an event that not only showcases world-class racing but also provides a boost to local businesses and reminds us that entertainment can be an economic engine.
Communities often search for ways to attract visitors and create excitement. Brandon clearly has that opportunity every time the green flag drops at Huset’s Speedway.
