Details from District 2: Entering the third week of the Legislative Session ...
We are now entering the third week of the 2026 legislative session. Last week was the first full week of committee hearings, and we’ve been busy reviewing bills and hearing testimony on key issues. It’s been a productive start, and we’re moving forward with agency bills and other essential legislation that keeps our state operating smoothly.
This year, I have the honor of serving as Chairman of the Judiciary Committee, and I also serve on the State Affairs Committee and the Energy and Commerce Committee. In Judiciary, we’ve already handled six of Attorney General Jackley’s bills, and next week we’ll be hearing two animal cruelty bills. In State Affairs, we’ve discussed the Governor’s Future Fund and term limits, while in Energy and Commerce, we’ve addressed topics like Class B electrical licenses, just to name a few.
I’m proud of the teamwork in District 2. Representative Sjaarda continues to work diligently in Appropriations, and Representative Kull is a key leader in the House. We appreciate hearing from you and look forward to talking about education funding and other priorities at the upcoming Chamber event.
The legislative session continues through March, and we have key deadlines approaching for bill introductions and committee action. Thank you for staying engaged – we value your input as we work to keep growing South Dakota.
Sincerely,
Senator Steve Kolbeck
