City buys Christmas lights, vetoes Valley bus

Brandon will be lit for the holidays this Christmas. The city council approved a motion Sept. 5 to purchase 7-foot stockings and 6-foot candles to adorn 28 Splitrock Boulevard streetlights this Christmas at a cost of $10,600. The city plans to expand holiday décor to the 48 streetlights along Holly Boulevard next year and Sioux Boulevard in 2019.
The council also approved motions to annex land at the Rovang Industrial Park and allow two Sioux Falls men to hold a soccer tournament at McHardy Park on Sept. 16-17. The tournament, which will run all of Saturday and half of Sunday, will consist of up to 16 games and bring an estimated 500 players, officials and spectators to Brandon. Mayor Larry Beesley advised the men that the city’s approval was contingent upon their agreement to look into obtaining event insurance.
After hearing residents’ recent requests for a city bus route that would transport 20 Brandon children to Valley Springs’ new First Lutheran Preschool Academy five days a week, the city vetoed moving forward due to the estimated cost, $34,000 to $37,000.
The city council also issued pay applications for street improvements on Redwood and Splitrock boulevards, the Brandon Park addition, the Slurry Seal project on Holly Boulevard, and re-stripping throughout the city.
Brandon’s next regularly scheduled council meeting is set for 6 p.m. Monday, Sept. 18, in the council chambers.
