BRANDON - The first day of the 2025 South Dakota State Amateur Baseball Tournament featured two Class B games. In the tourney opener on Wednesday, Aug. 6 at First National Bank Field in Brandon, the Parkston Mudcats defeated the Flandreau Cardinals 10-2. And in the nightcap, the Alexandria Angels made quick work of the Lake Norden Lakers in a 15-0 blowout.

Alexandria 15, Lake Norden 0 - The Alexandria Angels made a big statement in their opening round game in the Class B tournament. The Angels run-ruled Lake Norden 15-0 in just five innings and overwhelmed the Lakers from the start.

Alexandria (17-5) scored six times in the bottom of the first, fueled by a Jordan Gau double that scored two with the bases loaded and no outs to make it 2-0. That was just the start.

On top of the six scored in the first, the Angels scored twice in the second, four times in the third and four times in the fourth for the 15-0 lead.

Nine different Alexandria players got a hit, led by two each from Jerrod Zens and Peyton Smith. Gau, Bradley Dean, Michael Schoettmer, Peyton Smith, and Jacob Giles all finished with 2 RBI in the win.

Cole Wenande homered for the Angels in the third, a solo shot that is the first of the tournament.

While the Alexandria bats were on point, the Angels got a gem on the mound from Alex Ferrin. Ferrin pitched five solid innings, striking out six while giving up just one hit.

Lake Norden’s lone hit was a single by Kale Stevenson in the third.

Alexandria advances to the second round and plays at 5:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 10 against Parkston.

Parkston 10, Flandreau 2 - The Parkston Mudcats opened the 2025 South Dakota Class B amateur baseball tournament with a 10-2 win over Flandreau on Wednesday at First National Bank Field.

The Mudcats (14-12) got seven solid innings from Jake Weber on the mound. The righty gave up just three hits, all singles, and struck out two as Parkston held a 2-0 lead when he was relieved in the bottom of the eighth.

The Cardinals made things interesting in the eighth when they scored twice to make it 4-2. But Parkston blew things open in the top of the ninth, scoring six times for the 10-2 lead.

Beau Severtson picked up the loss for Flandreau (12-11) on the mound, but still had a solid outing, going 7.0 innings while striking out five with six hits.

Cullen Verville was 2-for-2 with a game-high 5 RBI for the Mudcats. His sacrifice fly in the first got things going for Parkston, and he scored in the fourth to make it 2-0 on a Max Scott single. His second sacrifice fly in the eighth made it 4-0. He doubled in Parkston’s big ninth inning, scoring three.

Flandreau finished with four hits, all singles except for Severtson’s double to open the eighth where the Cardinals scored twice.

Parkston advances to the second round and plays at 5:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 10 against Alexandria.
