Virgil Rollag
Virgil Charles Rollag passed away at home on Dec. 28, 2025.
He was born in Valley Springs, S.D., to Otto and Leaine Rollag. He went to school in Valley Springs where he would graduate from high school.
Virgil was a welder by trade … and a really good one by all accounts. He belonged to the Iron Workers Union and worked some union jobs, but he preferred to be self-employed working contract jobs (Rollag’s Welding) for many years until eventually retiring in 2006.
Virgil met Judith “Judy” while she was working as a bank teller in Brandon, S.D. They married in December 1971 (after only three months of courtship!). Judy already had two girls, Julie and Jill, and they became an instant family living in Brandon. In 1973, Virgil was hired on for the Big Stone Power Plant installation. The family moved up to Milbank/Big Stone. Virgil actually found 40 acres on Big Stone Lake that included lakefront property. And with all this land, Virgil started a farm! Cows, horses, chickens, rabbits, cats and dogs! He ran the farm all the while still working full-time at the power plant.
Virgil and Judy had a son, Brian, in May 1978. Once the power plant was complete, Virgil’s work took him on the road doing contract jobs. Soon thereafter, the family then moved to Greeley/Evans, Colo., in June 1979 where work was more plentiful and closer to home. His pastime was to hang out at the barbershop, VFW and café “complaining” (visiting with his friends).
Virgil is survived by his two sisters Bonnie and LaRae; two step-daughters, Julie and Jill; and brother-in-law, Larry.
Virgil was preceded in death by his wife Judy, son Brian, brother Raymond, and brother-in-law Jimmy.
No service will be held at his request.
Donations may be given in memory of Virgil to the Wild Animal Sanctuary, 2999 Co. Rd. 53, Keenesburg, CO 80643 or online at wildanimalsantuary.org.
