Candidate forum to air Saturday, Sunday

Monday’s Ward 3 candidate forum will air on the Alliance channel at 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, March 28 and 29. Basic cable subscribers can view it on channel 18 and digital subscribers can watch it on channel 21. 

Polls for the municipal election will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 14. Poll sites are the Brandon City Council Chambers (Ward 1), Brandon Fire Hall (Ward 2) and Brandon Golf Course (Ward 3). Voters in every ward will decide if fireworks will be allowed July 3 and 4, while only Ward 3 voters will choose either TJ Cameron or Jack Parliament as their council representative.

The forum is a joint endeavor of the Brandon Valley Journal and the Brandon Valley Area Chamber of Commerce.

 

Needs change mid-month at BAFP

The coronavirus has constituted a change in needs for March at the Brandon Area Food Pantry. The revised list includes granola bars, Banquet Homestyle Bakes, instant oatmeal (flavored), peanut butter, hard taco shells, bagged noodles (egg noodles, elbow macaroni, etc.), bagged cereals, microwave popcorn, tampons, dog and cat food (both 3-pound bags and canned). We continue to have an ample supply of canned vegetables, fruits and soups.

Before donating food items, please check expiration dates and that cans are not bulging from age and/or freezing. Monetary donations are also appreciated.

The BAFP is open 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays at 406 Main Ave. To learn more, call 605-582-7001.

 

BVSD Teacher of Year nominations sought

Brandon Valley School District and First National Bank will once again recognize the Brandon Valley Teacher of the Year for the 2019-20 school year. Parents, students and staff are encouraged to nominate a BV teacher for this honor.

Nomination forms can be picked up at any district principal offices, the central office or from the district website. Two letters of recommendation must be submitted with the nomination form.

Nominations are due to the BVSD Central Office, 300 S. Splitrock Blvd., by Thursday, April 9.

 

Annual pet clinic is April 30

The annual pet vaccination clinic for city of Valley Springs residents is scheduled from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, April 30, at the city maintenance shop, 308 Broadway Ave. For more information, call City Hall at 757-6555. 

 

BV Hall of Fame banquet postponed

Due to COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s Brandon Valley Athletic Hall of Fame banquet has been postponed from its March 28 date.

This year’s inductees are Dan Hanson, Class of 1976; Mike Meyers, Class of 1982; Heidi Hoff, Class of 2009; and the 2011 state championship girls’ basketball team.

The Journal will keep readers apprised of the banquet’s rescheduled date when set.

 

Fire Department postpones spring fundraiser

Brandon Volunteer Fire Department’s two-night spring fundraiser, Dueling Duos, has been postponed to later dates yet to be determined.

Brandon Farmers Market vendor meeting

A meeting for vendors of the Brandon Farmers Market will be held from 6-7 p.m. Wednesday, April 22, at Kingbird Coffee in Brandon. The Farmers Market will be open from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. on Saturdays June through October and 4-7 p.m. on Thursdays July and August.

Brandon VFW selling raffle tickets for gun safe

Brandon VFW Post 4726 will sell raffle tickets for a gun safe, valued at $500. Tickets are $5 each and may be purchased until the Loyalty Day Parade on Sunday, May 3. 

Proceeds allow the Post to assist veterans in need, promote/finance community activities and facilities maintenance.   

                                   

Brandon Senior Citizens

The Brandon Senior Citizens meet 12:30 p.m. every Thursday at the VFW for Bingo and cards. All are welcome. The group also lunches together on the third Thursday of each month, with a noon meal catered by Tony’s. To reserve a spot, call 605-582-3838.

 

Al-Anon meetings in Brandon

Al-Anon meets from 7-8 p.m. every Tuesday at Brandon Lutheran Church, 600 E. Holly Blvd.
