Supe's On: Safety measures are serious business at BVSD

By:
Dr. Jarod Larson, BVSD superintendent
The safety and welfare of our students is our No. 1 priority. On Friday, Jan. 10, the Brandon Valley School District Safety Committee conducted a district-wide safety training for all staff. All buildings and departments of the Brandon Valley School District participated in the school safety training.
The training included multiple components involving a variety of topics related to school safety, which included:
• Stop The Bleed – Presented by First Responders/Healthcare Providers
The United States Department of Homeland Security has endorsed Stop The Bleed as a national campaign and call-to-action. Stop The Bleed provided participants the primary principles of immediate response to a hemorrhaging wound and the ABCs of bleeding. I would especially like to thank Brian Christianson of Sioux Falls Fire and Rescue for coordination and all of the trainers for their time and expertise in the delivering the program.
• Situational Supervision – Presented by Federal Bureau of Investigation
The Federal Bureau of Investigation provided staff training on the situational supervision of our children during an emergency involving violence. The safest place for a child in school is behind a locked classroom door. However, the school day involves transitions and commons areas. Empowering our staff through appropriate situational supervision training helps promote student safety. I would like to thank Brandon Police Chief Joe Weir for his efforts in coordinating the valuable training and the FBI agent presenters.
• Teen Substance Use & Social Media Trends – Presented by Carroll Institute
A current school district partner, Carroll Institute, provided training on adolescent trends in social media and substance use. The training session delivered information to school staff that will aid in the identification of devices and support staff understanding of social media applications that may be used by kids. We greatly appreciate our partnership and working relationship with Carroll Institute.
The most critical element of school safety is the positive professional relationships that staff establish and maintain with kids. It is important that students have a trusted adult within the school. In addition to technical school safety training, we emphasize and stress the critical importance of developing positive professional relationships with our kids.
