Supe's On: Return to school plan is still a work in progress

By:
Dr. Jarod Larson, BVSD superintendent

In collaboration with state and local officials and drawing upon the considerations of the Center for Disease Control, whereas practical and feasible, the Brandon Valley School District has developed a Three (3) Phase “Summer 2020 - Return to School Plan”, with the end goal of school beginning as scheduled in August.

A large workgroup is working through a collaborative process to develop each phase of our Summer 2020 – Return to School Plan. In addition, the group will develop practical and feasible safety processes and protocols for the return of students in the fall.

To support our Return to School Plan process and ensure we are making informed decisions, the school district will be conducting survey research in July. The research will provide data regarding the overall approval of our families regarding various potential return to school schedule strategies. Examples of the strategies include: Traditional School Days, 1/2 Days, AABB Days, or Distance Learning. In addition to our planning for students on-site, we will provide families the option to “opt-in” to Distance Learning for semester 1 of the 2020-21 school year. In these challenging times, it is important to provide our families the flexibility to choose an instructional model that best meets their family needs.

The Return to School Plan Survey will be made available July 6-13. The data from the survey will provide information and support the final development of Phase 3 of the Summer 2020 – Return to School Plan.

Lastly, a reminder that all individuals must complete the Daily Individual Health Screening Process prior to coming to school facilities. The screening process and training video can be found on the Summer 2020 -Return to School website. The absolute most critical component of the Return to School Plan is a cooperative partnership with families, staff, and students, where individuals commit to 1.) Stay home if sick, 2.) Practice good hygiene, (Hand washing/sanitizing) 3.) Practice social distancing whereas possible.
