REALLY? What we put into our bodies is vital to good health

There sure is a lot of information out there on what’s good for you and what’s not. The information is constantly changing, and I’m constantly asking myself, “Really? Is this really the truth?” Is it an opinion or is it someone trying to sell us on something they represent? I want to know the truth, because I want to help my family, my patients and my community live healthier and happier lives. In each column, I’m going to tackle topics related to health, happiness and habits.
I recently read an article, “The Arrival of ‘Free-of’ Food” by Carol Radice, which inspired me to shed some light on the topic of what we eat. Gluten-free, nut-free, dairy-free and GMO-free foods have exploded in popularity due to an increase in allergies and food sensitivities in consumers. This trend has been focused on what’s not in the food.
Now, the next trend gaining traction asks the question, “What is in my food? Where is it coming from? Is it clean and fresh? Is there stuff in it that is not good for me, such as trans fats, antibiotics, hormones, added sugars and artificial colors and dyes?” I believe it’s vital to be aware of what we put into our bodies by increasing the transparency of our food supply and becoming more educated, health-conscious consumers.
My dad has his bachelor’s degree in nutrition. He would frequently tell me, “You can’t make chicken soup out of chicken poop.” We have focused so much on the price and convenience of food that we have forgotten the main point of eating: to fuel and repair our bodies. Herein begs the question: What can I do?
I like to keep it simple. Buy (or harvest) meats, fruits and veggies that are organic and local, when possible. Check out your local farmer’s market. Eat more whole foods and less processed foods. Do more cooking at home with healthier quality ingredients.
Just because it’s “free-of” doesn’t mean it’s healthy. Health is about momentum, and the fact of the matter is we are either getting healthier or sicker.
