From the Pulpit: Joy to the World

“Joy to the World, the Lord is come. Let Earth receive her King.” This song has filled the air these past days, declaring the birth of the Messiah.

2,000 years ago, the shepherds out in the field heard much the same. But the angel said unto them, “Do not be afraid.   bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today, in the town of David, a Savior has been born to you, he is the Messiah, Christ the Lord.”

The Joy of Christmas is everywhere. It can be heard in the delightful screams and giggles of children as they open presents. It can be seen in the faces of families as they gather. It can even be tasted as we sit down to a meal full of dishes and memories from the past.

I noticed a change in me over the years. As a child, the joy is in getting a gift. And now, as a grandparent of three, the joy is in giving. There is no better experience than to watch and listen to the little ones as they open packages. I know the time to clean up wrapping paper is coming, but for now, just sit back and see the wonder of Christmas.

It reminds me of a moment in the life of John the Beloved. He is now the “Grandpa” of the young group of believers, following Jesus Christ. He writes in III John 1:4, “I have no greater Joy than to know my children walk in truth.”

Perhaps that is the greatest Joy of Christmas. The Joy that was spoken by the angles is echoed every time someone chooses to let the Christ child be born in their heart. God Bless, Merry Christmas and JOY TO THE WORLD. THE LORD HAS COME.
