Poppy sales continue amid coronavirus

Staff report

As April comes to a close and May arrives with all of its beautiful flowers, one of the most precious flowers that comes out in May is the red crepe paper poppy. South Dakota veterans are still making poppies, and the Charles R. Doman American Legion Auxiliary Unit 131 in Valley Springs refuses to let a pandemic prevent distributing poppies and collecting donations for this country’s disabled veterans.

Obviously, Valley Springs Auxiliary members won’t be selling poppies at Sunshine Foods in Brandon this year nor will you find cans of the crepe paper poppies in the various businesses in and around Valley Springs. Instead, the Auxiliary is focusing on what they can do, rather than what they cannot do.

Anyone who would like a poppy may send a donation and a self-addressed stamped envelope to Gloria Bonjour, 47860 U.S. Hwy 18, Canton, SD 57013. Donation checks should be made payable to ALA Unit 131.

Make sure to specify the number of poppies to be purchased; $1 per poppy is the suggested donation.
