Marion Johnson, 81

Marion Jean Johnson, 81, of Sioux Falls, passed away peacefully at her home with her family by her side on Friday, Aug. 13, 2021. Funeral services will begin at 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 20, 2021, and visitation with family present is from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 19. Both the funeral and visitation will be held at George Boom Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, please consider sending memorials to the family.

Marion Jean (Baldwin) Johnson was born Dec.13, 1939 in Bricelyn, Minn., to Donald and Phyllis (Curtis) Baldwin. Marion graduated from Lakefield High School in Lakefield, Minnn., before attending Nettleton Commercial College in Sioux Falls, where she earned her Associate’s Degree.

While in college, Marion met her future husband, Kenneth (he was a quiet man, but it was Marion’s mission to get him to talk). The couple united in marriage on Oct. 17, 1959, in Lakefield and were blessed with five children: Joey, Mike, Adam, Jody, and Jay.

Marion and Kenneth lived in Minnesota for quite a few years before moving to Sioux Falls in 1975 and then to Brandon in 1977. Marion helped run the family business, Rainbow Sportcards, before eventually selling it to her youngest son, Jay.

Marion was a member of St. Lambert Catholic Parish in Sioux Falls where she enjoyed attending church. In her spare time, she cherished going to Blue Earth, planting flowers, gardening, going to coffee at the gas station in Brandon and working on home improvement projects – until later on in life when her kids had to confiscate her tools (like the ladder), despite her determination.

Marion loved her family. She was a proud mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Everyone, including her kids, called her “Grandma J” and even a few called her “little grandma.” Marion had the best personality, lit up every room she walked into with her infectious laugh, and always left people feeling full.

Marion spent the last few years of her life living in Sioux Falls just a few blocks away from her oldest son, Mike. She loved to walk to his house and visit.

Grateful for having shared her life are her children, Michael (Debra) Johnson of Sioux Falls, Adam Johnson of Sioux Falls, and Jody Sundvold of Garretson; 10 grandchildren, David (Maudi) Dalseide of Sioux Falls, Amber (Tyler Brockberg) Tebben of Sioux Falls, Typhinie (Justin) Thompson, Brian Johnson of Sioux Falls, Courtland Johnson of Sioux Falls, Sarah (Lance) Perrion of Ipswich, Jennie (Nic Peterson) Hegge of Sioux Falls, Mikayla Johnson of Sioux Falls, Kyle Johnson of Sioux Falls and Joseph Sundvold of Garretson; 11 great-grandchildren; one brother, Donny (Florene) Baldwin of Rake, Iowa; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Marion was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth (Sept. 27, 1997); parents, Donald and Phyllis; two sons, Joey and Jay; granddaughter, Kristin Jo Johnson; great-granddaughter, Charlie Thompson; and son-in-law, Bill Sundvold.
