Lynx go unscathed at competitive East-West Duals

Brandon Valley took down defending state champion Rapid City Stevens and went 4-0 against some of Class A’s top high school wrestling programs at the East-West Duals Jan. 25 in Pierre.
“The East-West duals are the toughest regular season dual competition of the regular season,” said coach Derek Outland. “Our guys showed a lot of heart and toughness throughout the day.”
BV’s biggest prize was overcoming Stevens. And the victory came down to the final match, where Sam Lembcke solidified the 39-33 win with a pin.
Trason Oehme, ranked second in the state at 106, defeated the top-ranked Jack Schoenhard in the first match of the dual.
“That got us off to a good start,” Outland said.
BV fell behind again, but the Lynx upper weights made a strong finish, as BV final four in the lineup (182-heavyweight), won by pin.
Against Sturgis, the Lynx came out sluggish and got behind early, 26-3 before staging the comeback. Once again, Lembcke earned a pin at heavyweight to complete the turnaround.
BV also defeated a strong RC Central team 39-28, and again were aided by four straight wins in the upper weights.
The Lynx finished out the day in control, defeating Spearfish 52-23.
“There were a lot of positives from a team and individual perspective,” Outland noted.
Trason Oehme and Lembcke went undefeated on the day, as did Isaac Klinkhammer (152), Damion Schunke (182) and Navarro Schunke (220).
Harrisburg, Mitchell, Pierre, Sioux Falls Roosevelt, Watertown and Yankton also competed in the tourney.
“We still have five weeks until the state tournament and lots of areas where we need to continue im-proving as a team,” Outland said.
BV competes at the Brookings Invite this Saturday and hosts its final matches of the season starting at 5 p.m. Monday, Feb. 3, when both Sioux Falls Roosevelt and Washington pay a visit to the Lynx mats.
