Brandon Valley football team took the field last week for their first practice in preparation for the 2017 season. Lynx head coach Chad Garrow has been busy all off-season trying to get his squad up to speed as he replaces 22 seniors from last year’s state-runner up team.
Leading the way this season is senior running back Braiden Petersen. The speedster led the Lynx with 1,049 yards and 13 touchdowns a year ago. Petersen and the other 15 seniors are ready to stop hitting each other and start beating on the competition.
The Lynx kickoff their campaign against the same team they started and finished 2016 against, the defending 11AAA champs from Washington. Although Brandon Valley came up short twice last year, Petersen says they are ready and looking for revenge against the Warriors this season.
“We’re very hungry and ready to get back at the Warriors. We have a lot of talent coming in, but we are a little short on guys,” Petersen said. “The talent that we do have is top-tier talent, so I think we should be pretty good,” he added.
The Lynx will host the Warriors week one in Brandon ay 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 26. The grid iron clash culminates a full day of Pigskin Classic fun. Between now and then Garrow and his staff are trying to find a quarterback to replace Alex Waltner, who threw for 2,006 yards and 20 TDs a year ago. The competition is heating up between sophomores Ty McCann and Thomas Scholten, as well as senior Mason VanWeston.
“It’s hard, obviously with sophomores, just because of the lack of game experience. You know, when the lights turn on and you have everyone running around you it’s a lot different,” Garrow said. “Mason has played a lot of JV and he started at safety on defense, so he has a little bit more maturity and you always like that out of a senior. We will just let it play out in the fall and see what we come up with,” he explained.
