Jill's Journal: Busy as a bee

By:
Jill Meier, Journal editor
I need a vacation.
From last week.
And probably the week before that and the one before that one.
You get the picture.
Last week was a busy week, which had this weekly newspaper editor on the hustle, bopping from one event to another.
But I wouldn’t have it any other way.
Nor do I know any other way.
This has been my way of life as a newspaperwoman of three decades-plus.
Last week, my week of busyness involved high school basketball games, a trip to Pierre for Brandon Day at the Legislature, meetings at the Brandon Valley Area Chamber of Commerce, hours of volunteering for the Ed Polzine Wild Game Feed, soliciting prizes and auction items for the game feed and the Chamber, and taking in the annual banquet for the local chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation, the Brandon Boss Gobblers.
In between events, I did my best to do some reporting, writing, picture taking, ad sales, planning and preparation for upcoming endeavors and promoting tickets to the free concert we’re sponsoring on Sunday.
That’s right, the Journal has teamed up with the Brandon Valley Performing Arts Center to bring you a quality performance from the Offutt Brass, a brass ensemble that’s a branch of the United States Air Force’s American Heartland Band.
The foot-tapping starts at 2 p.m. and the doors open at 1:30 p.m. There are still plenty of seats to be had, so no need to worry about getting your tickets in advance. But you’re still welcome to stop by the Journal office yet this week or log onto Eventbrite.com for tickets.
Better yet, show up on Sunday and we’re probably going to find you a vacant seat.
As for the vacation, it’s on the horizon – 23 days, to be exact – not that I’m counting.
But before this weekly newspaper editor can blast off, there’s more basketball games to cover, the Chamber’s annual Auction Amore (this Friday at the Holiday Inn) to attend, Coffee with the Council on Feb. 15 and the Feb. 22 Legislative Coffee to cover. Add Sunday’s concert into the mix, a few council and school board meetings, Ash Wednesday, more reporting and picture-taking, ad sales, preparation and planning for future endeavors, and a haircut and pedicure, and that doesn’t leave a whole lot of time for sleep.
Yep, I need a vacation.
