Jill’s Journal: You're never too young or old to subscribe

This issue marks the Brandon Valley Journal’s second official month in print and online. Yep, that’s right – this is the sixth issue of your new local newspaper. We’ve covered a little bit of everything in this first month, and that’s just what we’ve pledged to do each week. And trust me, there’s certainly not a lack of news. There’s more than enough news and happenings and interesting people and things to write about and photograph right here in our coverage area.

And you’ve been letting us know what you what to know more about or who’s doing something interesting that you feel our readers will think is interesting, too. We’ve made a list, and we’re going to try to do our best to tackle these various story and photo suggestions.

As we all know, this is an especially busy time of year in the newspaper business. And I should know, I covered it in words and photos for more than a dozen years in my former role. There are many activities to follow and snap pictures of with the start of the new school year. And of course, there’s always something to report from City Hall, the local business community and about our many community-minded organizations. And as for interesting people, places and things – there’s an abundance of those to write about, too.

We’ll continue to keep you in the know on street issues, the status of water and sewer needs, and the promise of trains running through our town in the future. We’re in the midst of introducing you to the 20 new classroom staff who joined the Brandon Valley School District this year. And as always, there are various benefits and milestone celebrations to make mention of, and endeavors of our many community organizations, such as the Brandon Valley Hockey and Baseball associations, both of which are moving forward on their respective endeavors.

Last month, I spent some considerable time on the grounds of Brandon Valley High School during the 17th annual Pigskin Classic. First, I manned the Journal’s booth, and want to thank those of you who stopped by to subscribe, share a news tip, to say hello or offer a comment or two on the job we’ve done so far. Please know that your kind words of support are greatly appreciated, and are just the boost the staff and I need to keep plugging along.

Recently, I received a sweet, handwritten letter from one of our newest subscribers, Margaret Scholten. She’s living proof that you’re never too old (or young for that matter, depending on your view of age) to subscribe to your local newspaper. Here’s what Margaret had to say:

“Congratulations on your new journey. It is exciting!

“Thank you for the bigger print so I can read about all the local news. I am anxious to get my first copy of the Journal.

“Wishing you the best from your 102-year-old subscriber, Margaret Scholten.”

The staff and I appreciate Margaret’s enthusiasm and kind words – and all of yours, too – for what we’ve embarked on, and look forward to keeping you in the know in words and photos in the weeks, months and years to come.

Thanks for subscribing to our print and online products. Thanks for advertising with us, And thanks for believing in us.
