Green Thumb Guru: Happy gardening to all

By:
Daemon Coughlin, Oakridge Nursery & Landscaping
I’d like to take the time to thank everyone for their business over the past year. It has been our pleasure to serve Brandon and the surrounding area with our expertise and knowledge for over 40 years. We wish all of you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. We’ll see you in the spring.

‘Twas the night before Christmas, when out in the planters
Not a creature was stirring, not even the ones with antlers
The tools were hung in the garden shed with care,
In hopes that spring soon would be there.

The gardeners were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of giant tomatoes danced in their heads.
And mamma in her kerchief, and I in my cap,
Had just finished ordering seeds for next year so it’s time for a nap.

When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I ran from the greenhouse to see what was the matter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Tripped on a poinsettia and made a loud crash.

The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow
Showed a clear path in the landscape of where the rabbits like to go.
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a miniature sleigh, and a herd of hungry deer.

With a little old driver, so lively and quick,
They ate my new hedge not leaving a single stick.
More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,
And I whistled, and shouted, and called each plant by name!

“Not my roses! My, daisies! My, apples! My, plums!
Leave my berries! My, hostas! My, dogwood and mums!
Stay off my paver patio! And new fieldstone retaining wall!
Now dash away! Dash away! Dash away all!”
He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
And filled all my planters, then turned with a jerk.
And after wiping the dirt from the side of his nose,
He watered and fertilized, to make sure it all grows.

He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,
And away they all flew after pulling some thistles.
But I heard him exclaim, as he drove out of sight,
“Happy gardening to all, and to all a good-night!”
