Diane Young, 79

Diane Young, 79

Diane Young of Brandon, S.D., 79, went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Thursday, March 26, 2020, at Ava’s House on the Sanford Health Care campus in Sioux Falls. A private family service will be held and a public memorial service will be scheduled at a later date. A committal service will take place in the Stout/Skola family plot at Rosehill Cemetery north of Parker, S.D.

Diane was born on May 18, 1940, in the Main Street Viborg Hospital as the third of the four children born to Fred B. and Mary L. (Stout) Skola. She spent her childhood and youth in Viborg. She attended First Baptist Church of Viborg and was baptized at the Swan Lake Baptist Camp. Diane graduated in 1958 from Viborg High School where she was active in music, drama, and cheerleading.

Diane attended Sioux Falls College (USF), which is where she met her sweetheart, Bob Young of Beresford. Diane and Bob were united in marriage on April 18, 1960. It was the classic relationship of the football captain and the head cheerleader. Little did Diane know that she was destined to become the ultimate football coach’s wife. Their journey began in South Dakota and Iowa and then to Phoenix for 19 years.

Diane’s many years in Phoenix were spent raising four kids, supporting Bob’s role as a high school football coach and teacher, participating actively in church, especially the choir, and eventually using her gifts and skills to become a hospital medical records specialist. Diane and Bob moved back to Sioux Falls in 1983. Diane worked as a supervisor of medical records at Sanford for 14 years. She continued to serve faithfully as Coach Bob’s greatest supporter and cheerleader and was “mom” to many college football players at the University of Sioux Falls. Diane’s patience, perseverance, understanding, loyalty, compassion and sacrifice are some of the characteristics that made players, coaches and fans love her and made her the perfect partner in Bob’s successful coaching career. Coach Bob says to all coaches, “Be sure to love, value and hug your spouse regularly! You need them the way I needed Diane.”

The Young family is very grateful to friends and caregivers who cared for Diane at home and the special staff at Ava’s House who cared for Diane in her final days.

Diane was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Marjorie Skola and Dorothy Layne.

She is survived by her husband, Bob, of Brandon; brother, Richard, of Viborg; four children, David (Georgina) of Phoenix, Steven (Pamela) of Maple Grove Minn., Jerilyn (Larry) Fox of Phoenix, and Melissa (Chad) Garrow of Brandon; 10 grandchildren, Andrea (Ryan) of Portland Ore., Matthew (Samantha) Young of Minneapolis; Natalie and Joshua Young of Maple Grove, Minn., Jacob (Margaret) Fox of Richmond, Va., Michael Fox of Greenville, N.C., Allison (John Mark) Dyer of Flagstaff, Ariz., A.J.
