BV Post 131 chisels out 4-1 record at Gopher Classic

Brandon Valley Post 131 had some good success over three days at the Minnesota-hosted Gopher Classic, coming away from the tournament with a 4-1 record. BV’s only setback was a one-run loss to Prior Lake, while they recorded wins against Middleton, Wis., Minneapolis South, Millard West and Rochester, Minn.

Following Tuesday’s double-header at Harmodon Park against Sioux Falls Post 15 on Tuesday, the team heads north to Fargo, N.D., for four games starting Friday.

 

BV 5, Prior Lake 6

Friday’s game against Prior Lake Legion was a heartbreaker for  Post 131, as they lost the lead late in a 6-5 defeat. The game was tied at 3-all with Prior Lake batting in the bottom of the fifth when a wild pitch fired by Joe Kolbeck allowed the winning run.

BV out-hit Prior Lake, 8-6, and was the first team to get on the board, scoring its initial run on a steal for home.

Prior Lake evened the tally in the bottom of the third on a Lucas H. single. They scored three runs in the frame, thanks to RBIs by Lance G. and Lucas.

Prior Lake Legion scored three runs in the third inning.  Lance G. and Lucas each had RBIs in the big inning.

Lance B. was deemed as the winning pitcher. He allowed six hits and four runs over 6 1/3 innings, striking out six. Carter S. threw 2/3 of an inning to close out the game.

Kolbeck took the loss. In his one inning of work, he allowed one hit and two runs, striking out one and walking one. Noah Bertsch started on the hill. The hurler went two innings, allowing three runs on three hits.

BV 4, Middleton 2

BV snagged a late lead to defeat Middleton 4-2 on Saturday. 

Knotted at 2-2 heading into the sixth, BV’s Nate Meyers singled on a 3-2 count to plate a run.

BV got their offense going in the second, when Tyler Schelske drove in a run on a single.

Logan Kelling went all seven innings on the mound. The ace allowed four hits and two runs. He struck out one and walked one.

Hellenbrand was charged with the loss. In his 5 2/3 innings of work, he allowed five hits and three runs, and sat down a trio of BV batters.

Michael Chevalier led the BV offense in his 2-for-3 effort at the plate.

Minneapolis South 4

Post 131 cruised to an easy 10-4 victory over Minneapolis South in their second game on Saturday.

Although Minneapolis South struck first in the opening frame, BV pulled away for good with three runs in the third inning. Lake Terveer’s sacrifice fly plated a run for BV and Schelske drew a walk to score a run.

The Lynx tacked on another five runs in the fourth. A highlight of the inning was a home run by Brown. The offensive firepower came off the bats of Nick Hokenstad, Kolbeck and Brown, all who drove in runs.

Trey Sejnoha pitched the win. He allowed four hits and four runs over five innings, and struck out two Minneapolis South batters. Caleb Zerr threw two innings in relief, recording the last six outs to earn the save.

BV 4, Millard West 0

Michael Chevalier threw a shutout en route to BV’s 4-0 blanking of Millard West on Sunday. The fireballer pitched seven innings, allowing no runs on three hits. He sat down five Millard batters and walked only one.

BV’s initial run came in the top of the first on a Jaxon Haase double, which plated a run. The Lynx also scored one run in the second, fifth and sixth innings.

Tanner Wilbeck took the loss for Millard. He allowed BV four hits and three runs over 4 2/3 innings, and struck out four.

Six BV batters all had a hit in the game: Haase, Lake Terveer, Dawson Skorczewski, Ayden Spicer, Logan Kelling and Kolbeck.

BV 12, Rochester 2

An eight-run second inning was too much for the Rochester (Minn.) Redhawks to overcome on Sunday, as BV registered the 12-2 victory in five innings.

Kelling, Spicer, Kolbeck, Haase, Brown and Schelske all had RBIs in the run-productive inning. Kelling belted a double, Spicer hit a second, and walks were granted to Kolbeck, Haase, Brown and Schelske.

The Redhawks struck first, putting up a run in the top of the first on a Mason Leimber single, which scored a run. BV, however, answer back in the bottom half of the frame on a Kolbeck ground out, which plated a run.

Zerr was credited with the win. In his five innings on the hill, Zerr allowed four hits and two runs. He struck out eight Rochester batters.

Nick Weick took the loss. He lasted 1 1/3 innings, alloweing four hits and eight runs.
