BV boys tennis wins 4 out of 5 in weeks’ play

The Lynx boys had a busy week on the courts, coming away with four wins out of five duals. Brandon Valley secured wins over Huron, Madison, Aberdeen Central and Harrisburg, and were swept by frontrunner, Sioux Falls Lincoln.
BV asserted themselves in their 8-1 and 9-0 victories against Huron and Madison, respectively. Head coach Mike Zerr said the boys competed well and played to the level they are capable of playing.

Carson Mork turned in a solid performance at flight 2 and in doubles with Matthew Schmitz at flight 1. “His skill level is really high and he continues to learn the ways he can be most successful in singles and has made a great transition to No. 1 doubles after two years at No. 3 doubles,” Zerr said.

Andrew Hanson rebounded from a tough loss against Huron to overcome Madison’s Seth Fernau 6-2, 6-1 in the afternoon. “It has been fun to see him battle through his ankle injury and come back and really be a solid player for us at the back of our lineup,” Zerr said.

Lincoln proved that they are again the potential favorites in the state by reloading their roster with a bevy of talented players after losing only a few to graduation and such. BV’s No. 1 doubles team (Mork and Schmitz) showed their potential to start the second set, gaining a 4-1 lead by moving and playing well. “We have to have that killer instinct to go and finish matches and points when we get in situations like that,” Zerr said. “It was a great experience for our kids there. We had stretches and continue to prove that we can play really great tennis at times, but we have to find ways to be more consistent against the teams that are going to force you to beat them instead of giving you free points.”

The Lynx controlled Aberdeen Central behind an 8-1 in, but it went head-to-head against Harrisburg, eventually pulling out the 5-4 victory.

“This was a couple of good team victories against two solid ESD opponents. To come out and see our doubles teams play so well right away was really good to see,” Zerr said.

Ellis earned a pair of quality wins over both of singles opponents, and clinched the team win against Harrisburg with his 10-5 defeat of Isaac Donelan. Zerr said Talcott and Frantzen (No. 2 doubles) are starting to gel and play better, and BV’s No. 3 duo of Ellis and Hanson need to continue to play aggressive tennis and get forward to be successful.

“Seeing the success we have against some ESD schools has been good for us. We have a really tough schedule and the state is deeper than it maybe ever has been from top to bottom,” Zerr said. “We have started to make some gains and are starting to hit our stride going into a really tough stretch with Metro (last Saturday), Mitchell and Yankton on Tuesday in Yankton, and then the ESD Tournament. This is a good time for our boys to start gaining the confidence they have and hopefully continue to play their best tennis each time they get to go out and play.”
