Brandon Valley wrestlers fall to Pierre by two points

It came down to bonus points, and Brandon Valley fell short by a mere two points in a heads-up home dual Jan. 21 against a well-rehearsed the Pierre Governors squad.

The Lynx and Govs both won seven matches apiece, but Pierre ultimately claimed the 31-29 Eastern South Dakota Conference victory. 

“It was a hard fought dual,” said BV coach Derek Outland. “Pierre was able to score more bonus points in their wins and won the dual because of it. They wrestled well – hats off to them.”

The Lynx ruled the lighter weight brackets, getting off to a strong start with back-to-back wins secured by BV’s freshmen twins, Trason Oehme (106) and Jordon Oehme (113).

Trason took charge of his match, a 6-1 decision over Blake Judson, while Jordon registered a 4-2 win by decision over Trey Lewis.

Then came the lull. 

Pierre took the next four weight classes – 120 to 138 – before junior Isaac Klinkhammer (152) got the Lynx back on track with a 3-2 decision over Jack Van Camp.

BV’s Jack Smith (160), Kobi Terpstra (170) and Damion Schunke (182) kept the momentum going, and Lynx eighth-grader Navarro Schunke (220) registered a pin against Jacob Larson, shouldering the Governor wrestler at the 2-minute, 15-second mark. 

In the end, heavyweight Sam Lembcke (285) lost by pin to Preston Taylor in a 1:08.

The team loss, Outland said, serves as a mid-season eye-opener.

“We’ll use this as motivation and to learn from for the future,” the coach said.

BV’s matmen head to the Brookings Invitational Saturday, with wrestling action getting underway at 9 a.m. The team will host Sioux Falls Roosevelt and Washington in their final home matches of the season Monday, Feb. 3 starting at 5 p.m. Senior wrestlers on the roster will be recognized that night.
