Brandon Police issued just one citation for fireworks violations in the city over the Fourth of July holiday, according to Chief Dave Kull.

“Obviously, if you were in town there were a lot of fireworks enthusiasts,” Kull said. “But pretty much by 11:05 (p.m.) everything was quiet.”

The lone citation was issued about 11:30 p.m. on July 4, Kull said.

“We had a few complaints and we had a number of people that liked how things went,” he said. “It was kind of a mixed bag of responses. As far as the noise level and number of fireworks, I can’t say that it was more or less than what we’ve had in previous years.”

Brandon City Council updated the city fireworks ordinance this year, and Kull said residents largely adhered to the new guidelines.

“One of the problems we ran into was that everybody seemed to be knowledgeable about the times they had to stop shooting them, but what they failed to do is that they didn’t read further about no fireworks allowed in the street,” Kull said. “Most of my night was spent shuttling people off the street because that’s not a safe place for the kids and disrupts cars that may be traveling.”

One injury from fireworks was reported in the city. Kull said the injury was to a hand and that surgery was required.

Next year, Kull said it will be stressed that fireworks cannot be shot off from the street or in any of the city parks.

“There were no violations seen in the parks this year,” Kull said.

Kull did stress that any violations going forward will result in a citation, and the fine for the violation is $100.

“The other advisory we’re putting out there is if they have any (fireworks) left, box them up and save them for next year,” he said.
